Made in the classic Hunter style. Open fermentation after destemming and gentle pressing. Matured in new and old French oak barrels. This wine demonstrates the typical Hunter characters of dark berries, tobacco and saddle leather.

Deepish red/purple colour, with a softly mellow, earthy underbrush and plum bouquet. The palate is softly rich and plum-cakey, the texture soft and yet layered with savoury tannins and a gentle impression of mid-palate sweetness. Straightforward but very good, and has potential.

Huon Hooke – Real Review – 91/100

Machine harvested and matured in older French wood. Very Hunter, expressing an earthy warmth and scents of dried cherry pith, anise and terracotta. Succulent. A richer expression from a very warm vintage, balanced by lithe tannins and savoury integrity. A good drink.

Ned Goodwin MW – Wine Companion – 92/100

Three Ponds Shiraz 2019 Highlights

Hunter Shiraz

Shiraz is the most famous and best red varietal in the Hunter Valley. Quite distinct from shiraz in other parts of Australia, Hunter Shiraz is medium to full bodied, spicy, rich and fruity. Typical flavour profiles of Hunter Shiraz include dark berries, saddle leather, tobacco, cloves and chocolate. Often having better natural acidity and spice than shiraz from other parts of Australia, Hunter Shiraz rewards careful cellaring and food pairing.
